It was a busy end to 2018 for the PNDC team, with a number of projects successfully delivered. We have continued to grow our industrial engagement throughout the year which has resulted in a number of new partnerships. The PNDC is delighted to welcome both Chronos Technology Ltd and Fundamentals Ltd as new associate members.

For over 30 years Chronos has been delivering resilient sync and timing solutions and services in the UK and overseas for a range of sectors including Telecoms, Finance, Energy and Broadcast. Chronos joins the PNDC at a time where synchronisation and time measurement is key within the electricity networks, more so with the introduction of increasingly connected substations and greater deployment of Distributed Energy Resources (DER).

Duncan Smith, Business Development Manager with Chronos said “Timing and synchronisation between power plants and sub-stations is a key requirement in today’s Smart Grid. The ability to measure time in increments as small as a nanosecond is vital for efficient monitoring, phasor measurement, sampled values, resiliency and control of power plants and sub-stations to maintain safety and ensure continuity of supply.”  He added “We are confident Chronos can take an active role in helping to transform the electricity grid to meet the complexities and demands of current and future generation and consumption via our membership of PNDC’s world class facility.”

Fundamentals exists to solve problems. Their products and solutions have been improving the health and performance of the electrical grid for 25 years. The invention of TAPP (Transformer Automatic Paralleling Package) and development of the SuperTAPP relay range established Fundamentals as experts in voltage control. Fundamentals is now a full-service international company, providing products, services and consultancy for utility and private network/systems operators. Their global client base includes transmission, distribution, industrial, commercial and public sector. Based in Swindon in the UK and servicing the globe, the Fundamentals Group consists of: Fundamentals Ltd, Fundamentals Australia Pty Ltd, Powerline Technologies Ltd and Ferranti Tapchangers Ltd. They are the UK Channel Partner for GE Monitoring and Diagnostics and also represent Pacific Volt and Aclara SIS.

Fundamentals Technology Director, Dr. Vincent Thornley, commented: “We have had a developing relationship with PNDC for some time now, including making use of the excellent test facilities, and we’re delighted to be making this next step as an associate member. PNDC has a relevant programme of research for power networks and with our problem-solving approach we would like to be a key part in that.”

The PNDC looks forward to working with both of these companies over the coming year, as they engage within our growing research programme.
